Opening soon · Made in Aotearoa (NZ)

A friendship can begin with a few thoughtful words.

Read what people choose to share. When someone’s words stay with you, write back. A correspondence begins only when you both want it to.

For adults 18+. No photos, no swiping, no follower counts.

A world of perspectives

“Every letter is a window into someone’s world.”

Discover different perspectives. Share your own. Start a conversation through letters.

01 · Discover

Read a thought first. Discover the person second.

No photos, no swiping, no follower counts. Just a small daily selection of writing people have chosen to publish, organised around the topics you care about.

THOUGHT · Life and belonging

“Do you ever feel the best conversations happen with people you have only just met?”

How a correspondence begins

It only begins when you both want it to.

01

You write back

Something stayed with you. Tell the writer why, in a few sentences.

02

They read your note

They see your note, your pen name, your PennaPal ID and the country you choose to share.

03

They choose

Accept and write back, or decline kindly. If they decline, you won’t be able to invite them again.

04

Private letters begin

Just the two of you, at your own pace. Either of you can close it kindly, block or report at any time.

No one can write to you out of the blue. Every new correspondence starts with an invitation, and you always choose.

Other members see your pen name, PennaPal ID, the writing you publish, any one-line introduction you add, and the country you choose to share (or “Somewhere in the world”). Your real name, age, gender and exact location aren’t shown unless you reveal them in your own writing.

Food · Travel · Places

You don’t have to be a writer. You just need something worth sharing.

A market in Hanoi, a bach on the Coromandel, a family recipe. Sometimes a place or a dish says more about someone than any profile could.

Stamp

COROMANDEL

The bach has no wifi and a deck that creaks. We swim before breakfast and read until the light goes. Where do you go to slow down?

Quiet Harbour · Places and home

Stamp

HANOI

Six in the morning and the market is already loud. A woman handed me a bowl of phở before I’d even sat down. I think about that bowl a lot.

A GRANDMOTHER’S KITCHEN

She never measured anything. “Until it looks right,” she’d say. I’ve spent ten years trying to make her bread taste the way it did.

Ways to write

How would you like to begin?

Share a thought

A question, an observation, or a postcard from somewhere you love. Up to 500 characters.

Publish a letter

A longer, considered piece: a place, a book, a lesson, a meal. Others discover it under your pen name.

Write a private letter

To a correspondent you’ve met here. Only they can read it. New correspondents accept first.

Everything starts as a private draft until you publish or send it.

The Reading Room

Pull up a chair.

A slower room for talking about what we read, the thoughts we keep returning to, and the lines that stayed with us. No ratings. No reviews. Just conversation.
